Course Description

The Concepts in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery program is
designed for spine surgeons with little or no experience with MIS
procedures in the lumbar spine, who have an interest in adding 
MIS techniques to their armamentarium. The agenda includes 
a full day of hands-on training using cadaveric specimens 
supplemented by lectures from an experienced surgeon faculty.

 

Course Goals & Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the problems associated with early degenerative spinal conditions that become debilitation and have failed 
    conservative care management
  • Assess the need for intervention and to discuss options including continued non-interventional conservative care versus minimally invasive surgical treatment versus traditional surgical treatment
  • Identify the risks, pros, cons and benefits of minimally invasive procedure as it relates to a variety of spinal conditions and to be able to apply the appropriate treatment to differing advancing disease pathologies
  • Use fluoroscopic techniques to identify anatomical structures that represent landmarks for small incision intervention

 

Course lecture topics will include:  

  • Minimally Invasive Discectomy & Decompression
  • Minimally Invasive TLIF
  • Percutaneous Transpedicular Fixation
  • Management of Potential Complications in MIS
  • Lateral Approach for Interbody Fusion


The hands-on bioskills sessions will focus on:
 

  • MIS TLIF
  • Percutaneous Screw Placement
  • Lateral Approach for Interbody Fusion


Audience

  • Orthopaedic and Neurosurgeons 1-5 years in practice
  • Spine surgeons with little or no experience with MIS procedures in the lumbar spine
  • Spine surgeons interested in adding MIS techniques to their armamentarium
